The Big Bang: rewatch

Well, I still have nothing coherent at all to say, frankly: it's all still just a big mishy-mash of ooh and ahh and ( this one thing (and this other one) )

Anyway - I was going to write a big dull emopost about how my life is a bit shit at present, with work going a bit tits-up, and certain members of my family excelling themselves in thoughtless mean asshattery, even by their own high standards. But, you know, there it was, Doctor Who, and I watched it, and it cheered me up. Not (just) in an escapist way, but because of what it means: because it's this story that we all grew up with, and we're all growing up with it again, letting it keep working its way into our cultural DNA, this story that knows for certain that the universe is and should be a good place, and there are decent wonderful brilliant people in it, and we're in it too. (OK, sometimes it's about a spacewhale as well, but still.) I love that.

So thank you, Moff, and Smiff, and K-Gill, and, er, A-Darv, and all of you. It's nice to be reminded.

My capacity to post about Eleven-era Doctor Who is inversely proportional to my love. (Srsly. Keep attempting to make there be words about Vincent and it just comes out as a nonsensically proud smile and some crying.)
The Professionals fandom has just imploded in a flouncestorm of torch_woodly proportions, despite the show having been off-air since 1983. Sigh. Or possibly 'props: that's actually quite impressive.'
Insomnia till 4am makes for a sad pontisbright.
Zzzzzz.

What can you do with leftover roast beef? Apart from just gnawing it off in chunks with the fridge door open, obvs.

Am also now attempting crossposty business with my Dreamwidth (where I am also pontisbright, in an uncharacteristic moment of consistency, FYI), since LJ continue to be faily. Oh Semagic, you are...confusing. And your pen is purple: INSERT JOKE EVERYONE ELSE MADE IN ABOUT 2004. But your little lj-cut button has a little pair of scissors on it, so I will give you a go.

Um.

I grew my hair? (A bit. Only this is my hair, so I now have - in the words of a former hairdresser of mine, after he'd cut it - SO MUCH HAIR. It will keep me warm through the complete absence of summer we appear to be having, and if I happen to become imprisoned in a thorn-surrounded tower of any kind, I'm golden. Or 'Dark Chocolate', like it said on the box.)

There is Doctor Who! I love it like a fool. I don't think Simon Nye should be allowed anywhere near, well, anything, but my giddy adoration is such that my brain just goes 'fuckit, there's another one next week!' I suspect those rumbling about The Moff not having the script-editing experience of Rusty may not be off the mark: that's two sizeable dips in quality with guest writers in (though I liked this more than Victory of the Daleks, and both have lots of good bits: they just didn't stick together). Amy's Choice is still confusing me a bit. I can't think of another onscreen example of a DW ep starting with such a 'literalisation of a metaphor' premise: something where the location and villains are there solely to serve as conduits for character development. And I like when they fiddle with the format a little: love Midnight, like the idea behind Love & Monsters (if not...you know) - but this felt off. When Farscape did it at least we got lisping, Max Headroom, and Shakespeare. But FUCKIT, THERE'S ANOTHER ONE NEXT WEEK! I bet I shout 'Tractators!' madly at the telly at least once.

There is Ashes to Ashes! I love that like a fool too, but more of a conflicted fool who is desperate for Friday to come but also so so sad that it will all be over. It's like waiting to watch the final episode of The Prisoner (the real one, not that THING) for the first time, safe in the knowledge that the ending wasn't written by Patrick McGoohan. I will miss it absurdly.

Probably some other things have happened which don't involve telly or hair. But, yknow, feh.

And now, I am going to read the portion of my hard drive marked WIPS, aka Stuff I Wrote Ages Ago And Have Forgotten About, Presumably For Good Reason. Don't worry, I have alcohol.

Black Guardian Trilogy. More gingery minxing than has ever before been seen on dvd. I have waited for 2Entertain to give us a shiny boxset forever and ever, and now they have, and... yay?

OK, so I'm being a shite fangirl and haven't watched any of the shiny extra bits and bobs yet (anyone seen the new-effects version of Enlightenment? Cos frankly if it's anything like what they did to The Five Doctors, they can bugger off), but I have done the commentaries and can safely conclude that they are, erm, a bit dull. Sorry. However, there is a traditional solution to Who going a Bit Boring.

Anyway, until now I've been dealing with The Unsightly Business via the means of Timelash (not good: even Paul Darrow having the time of his life doesn't distract from quite how awful the script is) and recons of The Underwater Menace (because when the going gets tough, the tough WATCH FISHPEOPLE). But apparently it is Four To Doomsday rewatch night at davison_era, and... well, I can't hate it any more than I do already, right?

I'm trying to remember the rules of the Five drinking game. If it's just 'drink every time it is excruciatingly terrible, twice if it's Adric's fault', my liver may be in peril.

In which I am easily amused.

And overexcited! Did you know there's a new Seven/Ace/Hex audio out at the end of the month? In which Hex is, um, Florence Nightingale? Oh, Big Finish, how utterly delicious you are. (It has Dolly from Bonekickers in it, too. Which has reminded me that Bonekickers exists. Heee!)

I think I had too much coffee today. Or sugar. Or both. And toast for dinner, followed by a bowl of peas. (It was meant to be minted pea soup and bread, but I was too hungry. I'm sure mint isn't very nutritious, anyway.) Mmmmmmmmmmmpeas.

(By the way, the bee army are proving challenging to train on account of them only being able to count up to three - according to David Mitchell, anyway, and he's Junior Stephen Fry so probably knows things. But still, we persevere. Tomorrow: disorienting the enemy by means of flying at them sort of drowsily as if with no particular destination in mind. It's going to be a winner, I tell you.)

One day, I will manage to post a Big Pile Of Whiny Personal Shit to LJ without hitting Security: private 30 seconds later. But apparently not right now. Apologies to anyone hit by tl:dr yesterday. Short version: let me do my job? Cos my job is the thing you pay me to do. Jumping through hoops is that thing I was appalling at when I was at school. MY CAREER IS NOT MEANT TO FEEL LIKE ONE LONG P.E. LESSON.

OK, now I'm thinking about freezing communal showers. Bad metaphor, no biscuit!

Hmmm. I'm really full of pizza. Why do they put that much pizza on one plate? I left about half and still feel slightly like I might die. (Stomach may also contain some wine, but hey, that's sloshy, sloshy things don't take up space, right?)

Keep meaning to properly be all OOOOH FARSCAPE THOUGH, except the last one I watched was That Old Black Magic and frankly, if that was the only one you ever saw, you'd just run away to the land of less horrible acting where there aren't so many purple people. I do remember, back in the day, the guy who wrote it being....er...politely embarrassed? Makes me wonder how showrunners and exec prods might characterise certain things if they weren't still required to be part of an ongoing publicity machine. It's bad form to diss your peers: professionally illogical to diss yourself. But does Mark Gatiss look at The Idiot's Lantern and think 'wow, that was staggeringly disappointing'? Does Rusty think 'you know, actually, I'm repeating myself, and I was never much cop at the big denouements anyway'? Not just in a 'ohh, I'm so aware of my own fallibility, please validate me!' fashion: in a sincere, thoughtful, as-near-to-objective-as-possible summation of each 44 minutes that ended up on the screen. I don't expect them to say so, to us. Not now, anyway. I just wonder if they think that.

Farscape make me want to cry with how much I love it, though. I watched the first 8 episodes across one week, and it felt like being given tea and sat in a nice comfy chair while someone brushed my hair, and unlaced my shoes. Hi Moya, I'm home! :)

I made my DWth look beautiful. Mmmm, so pretty. And no, I've moved to Dreamwidth, not to London, but the layout is so pleasingly tube-mappy that a new icon seemed required. (Yes, fellow font-nerds, I know that isn't Johnston and that's why it doesn't look quite right. Yes, it annoys me too. Worse things happen at sea, probably.)

I'm amused that 'pretty' came above functionality in my to-do list, but I think that's why my LJ-borkage has been pissing me off so much. I've missed icons. I've missed pages that aren't ugly. And I probably wouldn't have bothered to do anything more than namesquat if it weren't for LJ basically having become unusable for me - but now I'm here, it's all nice and breezy. I'm still figuring out how to work custom flists and the like, but since I can't sensibly hold a conversation on LJ these days, I'll crosspost but keep comments only on DWth for the time being. Apologies if that's massively irritating: won't be offended at all if you can't be arsed. (Apologies also for bellowing 'someone give me a bloody invite' at the precise moment that everyone wanted one: I genuinely had no idea my final oh-god-LJ-is-killing-me moment coincided with the proper launch thingy, and would've been somewhat less shouty had I known. Um. I am covered with shame.) Will still be reading LJ people who aren't cross-posting/migrating, but eventually through some uber-complex feed-based thing which no one has yet invented. (Am I right that even if I subscribe to LJ's auto-existing feed for personal journals that all flocked posts will be stripped out? Because that makes it a bit pointless in some people's cases...)

I have so many million things to post about, just as soon as I figure out this whole "whether cross-posting buggers up cut-tags" business. When I sat down this post was going to be all about A2A. I hit a wave of fannishness earlier, skimming through old picspams (I hated Runaway Bride-Donna a lot. I did not want her to come back. Sorry, Donna). And real life is flinging me from cheery peak to hideous trough with gay abandon, and, oh god, a bit of me wishes I was still just watching lives happen to other people on TV, because they're a bit knackering in person. It's all fine, really. I'm just a bit unaccustomed to casually reading my horoscope, and having a love life and a career for it to be wrong about. I haven't been 15 for a really long time, so why is so much of my brain still stuck there?

Am still working out how to sync everything up properly (and make it look less vile), but will stick with crossposting to LJ for a bit and see how that works. Or doesn't. It's an adventure! Kind of.
