The problem with Bela is that she is one of those "I can do everything better than you!" kind of female characters that crop up quite a bit. (Do male characters ever have this syndrome? Or is it just taken as read that they can do everything better and it's only the women who have to make a huge deal out of it?) I think they can make her work, it's just that right now a lot of the time she drives me batshit crazy. (And I have seen other characters make it work, but usually they toned down the "I can do everything better so NYAH!" thing. I wish I had a better way to explain it.)
