Blake's 7, season 2, omgwtfbbq

pontisbright: (dougalconfused)
OK, so, let's just pretend I got round to actually writing a shedload of squee posts about all of B7 season 1. In them I observed how very much I did love it all, especially Servalan and Travis being completely brilliant at one another, and Blaaaaake actually being weirdly attractive (in a lumbering sort of way), and Avon filling the world with lols (sometimes intentionally), and Vilavilavilailovehimso, and how, really, any show where that prompts an 'ooh, is that Carol Royle?' is going to bring the happy round at Pontisbright Towers. (I may have skimmed over the intense boringness of Jenna and how much Cally needs a sandwich. But I skimmed over even these things with love.)

Aaaaaanyway, now am on S2. And...um...

Redemption? I approve of running around that place from The Hand of Fear with the pixie-like Thal from Genesis of the Daleks and Sheila Ruskin (who was Kassia in Keeper of Traken though I actually recognised her from Pros and had to look her up, for shame). But:

Photobucket

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK ARE YOU ALL WEARING?

Granted, Avon's gimpwear is not exactly a departure. But really, Blake, if you're going to be having fights with bits of electrical cable, you should probably opt for something a touch less parachutey? Cally looks like the Green Cross Code Woman. Vila's bananatrousers upset me. And oh, Gan, you did not really need to look more like an out-of-work Shakespearean stage actor.

I liked the bacofoil and flares in space and those weird furry parka things they had. I don't mind them looking a bit daft. I positively approve of them looking a bit daft. But THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE FUGITIVES. Fugitives do not wear velvet cloaks and big pouffy sleeves of impracticalness.

Also: I was hoping for a longer wait for Darrow to cotton on to the fact that the audience like his batshit delivery to random corners of the room. It's like Jack Sparrow: the minute we're all in on the joke, it stops being funny. Oh Avon, you were so much more fun when it was by accident.

I did like that bit when Blake told them all to sit down, when they were sitting down. But it was mostly quite annoying.

Tell me it returns to the giddy heights of S1?

Oh, in S4, it *really* goes into Darrow's head and he chews his way through the scenery. Avon is positively subtle up until then, I swear.

And smack me if you've read this somewhere already, but they actually had some of the S2 outfits made at a Soho sex shop. The leather ones at least. Which just makes everything so much more awesome. AND AVON'S HOOKER BOOTS ARE BRILLIANT, damn it.

IMHO, the writing is better in S2 (more Boucher bitchage) than it is in the other seasons, really. But YMMV.

I dunno, maybe I was just in the wrong mood. The direction pissed me off no end, and I never notice that kind of thing usually. Have watched a bit of the next one and it's really quite ace so far, so maybe once I get over my clothing trauma all shall be well...

I had heard S4 was when Darrow really started on his 'i am teh STAR' bit. Maybe it's that Blake seemed to have fuck all to do in Redemption?

HOOKER BOOTS OOH. Though nothing is going to make Cally's outfit ok. Why are they suddenly dressing her like Princess Leia?

Blake was there in Redemption to provide Angsty Slash moments for Avon, pretty much. I mean, come *on*. Two gropes before the episode is halfway through!

It r have the same costume designers who did some of the Romana outfits and Hand of Fear (hence the Mutoid headgear being like Eldrad's, and Servalan nicking Romana's white feather ensemble). But oh god, Weapon. The entry of the dread Lobster Suit on Avon. The fear. The fear. The costumes in that are ridiculous, apart from the ones on Carnell and Twinky Officer Dude (which are some of the best ones in all of B7, weirdly enough). And the direction on that one is... yeah, as groanworthy as it gets, pretty much. I wonder what drugs they were taking.

Am on Shadow, actually: tinfoil Avon! Though am now looking forward to the Lobster Suit...

Oh, I do love most of S2. There are some duds, and some of the costumes are ridiculous (which, frankly, I love), but it's still glorious. S2 is far better than S3, in my opinion, although I think S4 is amazing again, though in a completely different way than S1, ahahahaha.

Blake's massive big sleeves are love, shut up! XD [livejournal.com profile] vilakins has an icon that says "Big Sleeves, Big Cause" I LOVE IT. XDXDXD

Avon's demented dentist get up is lovely. Cally is ALWAYS in crap outfits, save for Time Squad, Shadow and Killer (and maybe City On the Edge of the World). Killer is her best, IMO, though she's like in the spidode for 5 mins. And still needs a sandwich.

I love Jenna so much. I refuse to listen to you call her boring! She kicked Space Shiek Ass! What is not to love?!

They all start wearing leather in mid S2, and Avon wears my favorite costume later (sort of a stripy silvery/pewter/grey leather jacket), and Vila his lovely brown suede. IT GETS BETTER I SWEARS.

Avon just gets more and more camp though.

The sleeves are unspeakable. I think it's more the complete weirdness of them suddenly all being in panto-wear, when otherwise the ep is really keen to be brisk and follow straight on from Orac without a hint of pre-amble or explanation. Where the hell did they all come from?

I shall look forward to future leather-based highlights, anyway. And more camp Avon, hee!

I cannot believe you like Jenna. So relentlessly meh. I spent all of Duel going 'but why is she even there????' Blarg.

[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com wrote:

Well, she didn't do much in Duel, it's true. But I still love her rather a lot. She's gorgeous! And pilots! And kicks Space Sheik ass! And holds her own against Avon! And they probably do each other's hair! And she threatens people! With guns! And does it all in silver heels! And makes cuddles with Blake! And is not catty at all, which was a surprising relief! And doesn't get posessed frequently by aliens, like Cally! Also, she has great tits!

I imagine that, um, they've got a full Wardrobe Room on Liberator. >_> It is a bit silly, but I never really thought about it canonically, much. Maybe there's a clothing replicator on the ship and it recycled all the old stuff into these new outfits. (Though Avon wears that bacofoil tunic several times in S2 and at least once in S3, so maybe not.)

I just don't see the point of Jenna at all. She gets nothing but tedious lines about whether the engines are working. Her tits are entirely invisible under a selection of deeply nauseating glittery things. Her hair is RUBBISH! (ETA: all their hair is rubbish, to be fair, but that doesn't make hers less rubbish.) I dunno, Blake is kind of cute with her, but with those bits I just end up going 'but why?' rather than it making me like her more. And she seems to have no relationship at all with anyone else other than to be a bit sneery.

The Space Sheik was too cringe-y all round for me to be all 'yay Jenna' about it. :(

Maybe Orac has a cunning secret weaving circuit?
[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com wrote:

Poor Jenna. She's totally kickass. I refuse to believe anything else. *crosses arms resolutely* Alas. I love her rather a lot. Certainly more than Cally, anyway. Sigh.

As for "But why" . . . well, Blake's other options are Brutish Gan, S(t)ickly Cally, Cowardly Vila and Camp Avon. I'd probably go for Jenna too. (Well, I'd probably go for VIla, but I wouldn't say no to Jenna...)

Ah well. We can't all love everyone. Maybe you'll come around.

As for Orac, it's entirely possible, although they didn't get him until episode 13, so even so, Avon and Jenna had to do each other's hair until then. Everyone cringes about Jenna's hair, but I find Cally's far more flat and offensive. Jenna's is big, but at least it looks healthy.

Cally's hair is indubitably the worst. I would give her a bottle of conditioner along with the sandwich (though it's looking a bit less stringy and horrendous in S2).

I shall leave you over there in your weird Jenna-loving corner, you freak. You like Adric, after all... :P
[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com wrote:

Poor Cally. It does, gradually, get better. But it's still pretty awful for the most part. Poor girl. Avon's, on the other hand, gets nicer in S2, is tolerable in S3, and then goes completely to hell in S4. Works nicely with his insanity, but, oh, man. He looks about 20 years older.

I cannot believe you're equating Jenna with Adric. What about when creepy rapist on the prison ship was like, "We don't have facilities for women crew, but I could be accomodating for you? ;););)" and she whipsers to him something probably akin to "I'd rather fuck George Bush" and he slaps her? SHE IS AWESOME. SHUT UP. And then she names the ship! And threatens to kill Avon! And refuses to leave Blake--multiple times! And she BELIEVES IN HIM when almost no one else really does and. Oh.

You'll come round. I know it.
[identity profile] pontisbright.livejournal.com wrote:

See, the 'oh, a WOMAN PRISONER *slurp*' stuff just made me go 'oh god headdesk' and it was just horrible rather than at any point being Yay empowerment! Though to be fair, I was coming off a bout of watching The Equalizer and Dempsey and Makepeace which both suffer from the special 80s disease of female = rape fodder in pretty much every episode. I mean, yay she doesn't go squeaky or capitulate or anything, but I kind of need more from my heroines than for them to not be rape victims, yknow? Actual personality > ohlookawomanwhatshallwedowithitohrapingthatlldo.

I think I have Jenna issues. How weird when she is so bland. :(

I love S4 Avon already. He's so 'gone to seed without knowing it'. It's like his perfect fate.

Poor Jenna. I just remember it's the 1970s and Uhura was still in a miniskirt and repeating the computer. (Well, okay, maybe not, but not far off.) It's possible I love Jenna a little too much. But I am surprised to see her called bland. Cally, yes. Jenna, however, is surprising to me. Ah well.

Poor S4 Avon. It's utterly nuts. It's certainly an inevitable fate, though I'm not sure about "perfect." XD

I actually quite like Cally, I just realised. The telepathy stuff is all bollocks, obviously. And the needing-a-sandwich thing is honestly quite distressing to me. But I like how she seems to actually give a shit about the other people in the crew. She asks questions about stuff and gets arsey and I quite like her weirdass nervy thing. Plus she just told Vila she wanted a necklace made from his teeth, which amused me. I don't like her new clothes at all, though: like they're trying to make her totty when she really isn't.

OK, maybe not Avon's perfect fate, bless him. His perfect fate would be being trapped on that planet with the loopy bird who thought he was god. Inevitable though, yep :)

I do like Cally in "Shadow." I think that's one of her best episodes, actually. And, really, I like that outfit too. It's one of her less grandmaish ones. But, you know, she gets posessed by some alien thing. Again. It happens three times in S3. It gets old, fast. I don't mind that she's compassionate, I just dislike that they introduced her as a kickass freedom fighter rebel type, and very quickly turned her into the ship pascifist. I just find her terribly boring, I guess.

Ah well. At least you've got Dayna and Soolin to look forward to? Ahaha.
[identity profile] pontisbright.livejournal.com wrote:
Jul. 24th, 2008 10:44 pm (UTC)
I am bummed about her going from the 'wahey I will kill you dead' thing to 'oh i am so sensitive' thing in no time at all, yeah, give you that. But they do kind of need someone on board who gives a toss about anyone else. However much I love the idea of how amazingly brutal and selfish they're all capable of being. :)

Saw the first few of S4 not that long ago, and obviously Soolin has Glynis Barber points, but damn her hair perturbs me. I may need to get over that. I seem to remember thinking Dayna was quite awesome when I was about 5, though.
[identity profile] vandonovan.livejournal.com wrote:

They all have their flaws and positives, but I ultimately think all their positives balance out their flaws. (Well, except for Cally, for she gets the Awkward Love Interest thing that completely fails to work or make sense in S3 too, alas.) It's funny how the hair doesn't bother me, though. I think Soolin's is pretty fun, really. XD I mean, compared to Tarrant's fro-puff!

Dayna is kickass, and has great tits too, though she too has her occasional vapid moments. I mean, the series is certainly not without many flaws. But I love it despite them. And sometimes because of them. I mean, I love that Vila becomes a depressed drunkard and Avon goes complete off the edge, but so many fans hate S4. *shrugs*

I actually don't have a problem with her hair (tres ABBA) but the bunny suits......no. Just no. At least put a tail on them or something...

I do like the black-and-white thing that Jenna is wearing in this picture. Frankly, I still think that the best two seasons of B7 are the first two. Once you have seen seasons/series 3 and 4, you will understand. I can't say anymore, or it will be spoilers. Ssshhh!

And I think that fandom long ago decided that the aliens who stole the Liberator in the first place and then abandoned it were rather camp, don't you know? *laughs*
